Community Corner: Which cities are ripe for NWSL expansion?

SOCCER: AUG 11 NWSL - NC Courage at Portland Thorns FC

Shout em out...there are a few.

The NWSL has seen an increase in interest among fans and investors after the United States Women’s National Team won the Women’s World Cup last month. Seeking to capitalize on the extra eyeballs on the sport, the league is hoping to get new investors in cities that will help take the league to new heights.

Currently, the NWSL has 9 teams: the Chicago Red Stars, the Houston Dash, the Washington Spirit, Sky Blue FC, the Orlando Pride, North Carolina Courage, Reign FC, the Portland Thorns, and Utah Royals FC. Only two of those teams, Reign FC and North Carolina Courage, are in cities that have USL Championship teams. The others are cities that have MLS teams as well, some of them embracing the synergy. Just a couple years ago, both the Boston Breakers and FC Kansas City ceased operations, and teams folding or going on hiatus have been a major concern for the league. Still, there is hope that the aftermath of another USWNT World Cup victory is more investors stepping up to try and start teams in the NWSL.

So, today’s Community Corner asks: which cities are ripe for NWSL expansion? Where would you personally want to see NWSL consider? Could it be a city that has a MLS or USL Championship team? Or, is there another city that doesn’t have professional soccer where you think the NWSL could make it? Hit the comments and discuss!
