USA vs. Uruguay, 2019 Friendly live stream: Time, TV schedule and lineups

Soccer: CONCACAF Gold Cup-Jamaica at USA Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Let’s regroup.

The United States men’s national team takes on Uruguay for a final tune-up at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri before the CONCACAF Nations League. Gregg Berhalter’s side is attempting to bounce back from a lethargic 3-0 loss to Mexico, which is causing some to question the direction of the program. Uruguay defeated Costa Rica 2-1 in its last match.

U.S. Soccer announced that six players (Sean Johnson, Alfredo Morales, Zack Steffen, John Brooks, Christian Pulisic, and Weston McKennie) “were released back to their clubs”, with no replacements added. Brooks was ruled out against Mexico due to a groin injury. One key battle to watch is at goalkeeper, with the options being the veteran Brad Guzan and 24-year-old Jesse Gonzalez, who is looking to earn his first cap.

Uruguay is also missing star players, including Edinson Cavani, Diego Godin, and Luis Suarez. La Celeste is coming off a premature exit at the 2019 Copa America, but the 2020 edition of the tournament and World Cup qualifying are right around the corner. According to ESPN’s Tim Vickery, manager Óscar Tabárez (who has managed the side since 2006) focuses on “the youth ranks of the national team to develop players... to secure the future of the senior side” in order to maintain Uruguay’s standing in international soccer; this strategy — known as “El Proceso” — has continued to produce a steady stream of talent, but will be challenged to replace the current aging stars.
